Explain your piece (2-3 sentences minimum)
My piece is a man made dam that uses controlled holes to create water art. As the water fills up behind the board the only way out is through the holes. What materials did you use and how did you use them? I used a piece of plywood to create the dam. Also leaves, straw, and rocks from the stream to fill the gaps around the board so water couldn't get through. What are your thoughts on land art? (2 sentences minimum) Land art is hard because you have to use the land and space around you, much like installation art. However, I love how much impact the pieces can make because of the vas amount of space we have on earth.

Describe your piece. What was the process for making it?
My piece is a clay pot that I made by hand. I cut it off the wheel and let it dry. I then varnished and fired it. After the firing I glazed it and put it back in the kiln for a final firing. How does your piece use form, line, texture, or balance? My piece uses form through the body of the pot, and it showcases texture and balance through the glaze. Do you feel like your plan and your end result are similar? Did your idea change as it developed? No, I did originally want my piece pit fired but then there was an issue with them cracking in the kiln. After I found out one of my pieces survived I just glazed it and I was inspired by people mixing their glazes in the classroom. Do you feel you were successful in your piece/s? Why or why not? Yes, I think my piece was successful because it is a thrown pot which was the assignment. Describe your piece as if you were talking to someone on the phone.
My piece is an in the round piece that represents self harm. It is a standing sculpture, where on one side a hand is meshing into the surface and there are cuts covering the other side. The piece is all white except for the red glaze dripping from the top where it gets smeared along the way down. Explain your process to make this piece. I first made clay molds of both sides of my hand. Then I put paper towels on the inside and closed the molds together. After this I carved the shape down and placed it on top of a slab of clay. Then I added clay to smooth the connection between the hand and the slab. When the piece got to a leather hard stage I used scissors to cut slits on the side of the piece. The piece was then fired. When I added the glaze, I let it drip down from the top and then I rinsed it under the sink before letting it dry. Then it was fired again. How is your piece inspired by the NCMA piece? My piece displayed emotion through a hand in 3D, just like my selected NCMA piece. Both of the pieces used a hand position where tension was created. Do you feel like your piece, inspired by the NCMA artwork is successful why or why not? While I do believe it still conveyed the message I was going for, it did not show enough detail in the hand for it to be "successful". I believe the action of the hand is unclear because of that. I chose this piece to represent me because it shows the balance and structure of me. Some days it’s a built strong, some days it’s a little wobbly, and some it’s fallen down. It also shows how many factors go into building me :)
Describe:
For my Sgraffito project I made a plate with my design of Selene, the moon goddess. I first made the plate shape, then I carved the design, then I placed the over glaze, and then the crystal glaze after the first firing. Analyze: How did you use design in your piece? How did you use Line, Space, and Contrast? I used line to outline the center design and for spacing I made the goddess the center piece on the plate. The contrast in my piece was represented through white and black. Interpret: I separated the black and white into sections and then incorporated a black crystal glaze into the empty space. I picked this imagery solely from inspiration and research on the goddess. Judge: I think my piece was successful because it completed the project task. I'm not particularly happy with the precision because the design was detailed. Describe:
My pinch pot is inspired by Ursula from The Little Mermaid, it is a pinch pot surrounded by purple octopus tentacles. Analyze: I first made the pinch pot and started my original design, then when that didn't work I just started playing with the clay. I ended up with a curvy line wrapping around my piece, which I turned into octopus tentacles. That lead me to the Ursula design. Interpret: I showed my theme of line and texture through this piece through the continuous tentacle around my piece. Judge: I do feel that my piece was successful because it completed the project prompt and it looks great. Describe:
I made a elephant head. I first researched pictures of different elephants and then I found pictures of their anatomy. I then selected my elephant, sketched my piece, and then started sculpting the base of the head. I started with a pinch pot and then made the head and then the ears. Analyze: I created texture though the lines on the ears, the wrinkles on the trunk and eyes, and the watercolor by splattering pigment like sun damage. ' Interpret: I picked this animal because I wanted to create the ears and showcase something other than the face. Judge: I think my piece was successful because it does represent an elephant! Artist's Name:
Auguste Rodin Title: Hand Date: circa 1886 Size: 13 1/2 x 9 1/4 in. (34.3 x 23.5 cm) Medium: Bronze Cast This piece shows the expression in the human hand and I feel inspired to show emotion through a hand. I had this idea of doing a self harm piece and looking through the art I got a perfect idea of how I could go about that. |
